Americorps Program at Aprovecho

Aprovecho has teamed up with the Americorps "Links" program to offer an opportunity to volunteer at Aprovecho and receive an education award from Americorps that can be used to pay off future and current schooling, or student debt.

Position Summary:
The Carpenter will focus on construction and renovation on the Aprovecho campus. Projects may include: timber framing, shed building, finish carpentry, natural building (cobb, etc.), painting, light electrical/plumbing and renovations. Time will also be spent working with our Forestry crew to harvest and process timber for construction materials.

General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):
1. Working daily on varied construction projects. You will be guided and supervised by Aprovecho staff members, but you will
often be expected to work independently.
2. Consulting with staff on design, materials, and implementation of your projects.
3. Complete and submit all necessary LINKS AmeriCorps Program paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
4. Attend and complete LINKS AmeriCorps Program orientation and enrollment session.
5. Wear an appropriate LINKS identifier and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.

Member Benefits Include:
• We offer energy efficient, hand built housing on-site. Camping is also available in our forest.
• Staple foods such as: organic grains, produce, oils, spices are provided, other food is purchased by the member.
• We provide an invaluable experience in new ways of living in America.
• Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members receive an education award of $1,250. The education
award can be used to repay qualified student loans, for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning,
vocational or for trade schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used.
• Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay a portion of the accrued interest on
qualified loans, which is taxable).

Requirements:
1. A high level of confidence in your carpentry skills.
2. Experience working as a carpenter.
3. Willingness to be focused and flexible in your work.
4. Patience and inventiveness in your projects (making use of home-grown and recycled materials).
5. Comfortable with rural living.
6. Enthusiasm for working outdoors in all seasons.
7. Commitment to clear, direct communication with co-workers and land-mates.
8. Developed leadership and organizational skills.
9. 17 years of age or older at the time of enrollment in the program.
10. U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
11. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving an education award.
12. Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
13. Submit to a criminal history background check.
14. Regular and reliable attendance.
15. An in-person working interview at the Aprovecho Campus (contact Aprovecho staff for special arrangements).
