Field Trips   |    Overnight Workshops

We can accommodate groups of up to 30 youth in a half-day session. This allows for children to be engaged in a hands on learning experience that is above and beyond a typical field trip.

Here is a sampling of what kids will do during their time at Aprovecho:

Sustainable Forestry
Hike and experience first-hand our local watershed
Use classroom math to calculate the height and age of trees
Discover the history of our region as recorded in the forests

Appropriate Technology
Grind flour on our bicycle flour mill
Learn about stove technology and international health issues
Building with earth-based materials

Organic Gardening
Build and use compost
Plant in garden beds and greenhouses
Harvest and preserve fruits and vegetables

Activities are designed to be place-based, interdisciplinary and hands-on. Our goal is for each youth to have fun while learning how they can participate in building a sustainable future for our community and the world.

Group Size and Organization

The youth must be accompanied by at least 3 teacher or parent chaperones. Children will be divided into three sections, each of which will cycle through the activity stations in our forest, appropriate technology lab and garden. They will spend 40 minutes in each activity. All activities will be led by members of our experienced teaching staff.

Dates and Times

Half-day programs are being offered Tuesday through Friday afternoons. Programs begin at 12:30 p.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. Contact us to inquire about scheduling and availability.

What to Wear and Bring

All program participants should come dressed to be outdoors in the weather and to get dirty. We recommend that everyone have a full set of rain gear including water proof shoes, pants, jacket and hat. Dressing in layers that can be removed or added depending on the temperature is a good idea. All program participants should bring a bottle of water.

We will provide work gloves, all safety gear and all necessary tools. We will also provide a mid session snack.

Price: $10.00 per youth. Contact us to reserve space in this exciting program for youth
